International Educated MLTs  Application

Internationally Educated Medical Laboratory Technologists (IEMLTs) undergo various levels of training in order to obtain the credential to practice their profession in their home country.

The Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (SSMLT) has been mandated to ensure that the public is protected by ensuring a minimum professional standard is obtained in order to be issued a License to Practice the profession in Saskatchewan.

Licensure with SSMLT requires 3 Steps.

Step 1: Equivalency assessment

For IEMLTs that have not completed the CSMLS Prior Learning Assessement (PLA)
  • You must first complete a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) through the Canadian Society for Medical Science (CSMLS)
  • Refer to IEMLT information guide
If you have successfully completed the CSMLS Prior Learning Assessment and have been deemed eligible to write the CSMLS Certification exam or have written the CSMLS Certification exam and are awaiting results, and wish to apply to SSMLT, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Credential document review

IEMLTs that have completed requirements of the CSMLS PLA may be in one of three categories:

  • CSMLS Certified- no Canadian work experience
  • CSMLS certification exam written and results pending
  • CSMLS certification exam eligible and registered.

CSMLS Certified- no Canadian work experience

International Educated MLT that have successfully challenged the CSMLS Certification Exam but do not have work experience in Canada the following applies:

CSMLS Certification Exam - Results Pending

International Educated MLT that has challenged the CSMLS Certification Exam but is awaiting results may apply for a temporary licence-working under supervision.

Documents must be reviewed by SSMLT office to determine application eligibility.

CSMLS Certification Exam Eligible and Exam Registered

International Educated MLT that is eligible to challenge the CSMLS Certification Exam may apply for a temporary licence-working under supervision.

Documents must be reviewed by SSMLT office to determine application eligibility.

Step 3: SSMLT License Application

International Educated MLTs that complete all requirements of Steps 1 & 2 will be provided SSMLT application form for completion. SSMLT license applicants must complete the online application form, provide all general application documents required and make payment.
